BLADENBORO — A 5K Run, Walk & Stroll will take place on Saturday at the Elizabethtown Industrial Park beginning at 8:30 a.m. in an effort to raise money to help the Galyean family to offset costs associated with the adoption of their son from Congolese, Africa.
“This is not like a normal 5K run,” said Michelle Galyean. “We are asking for team leaders to get 10 members and for the team members to try to raise $100 each.”
The goal is for each team to raise $1,000, said Galyean. The proceeds from the 5K will go towards helping the Galyean family with the expneses incurred due to an internaional adoption.
“International adoption is very expensive,” said Galyean.
Michelle Galyean’s husband Barry is an associate pastor and youth minister at Galeed Baptist Church in Bladenboro. they have three biological children of their own —Kaite, 19; Jackie, 16; and Joseph, 15 — and one adopted son from Guatamala — Benjamin, 8. Their newly adopted son from Congolese also is 8 and his birthday falls one day after Benjamin’s birthday, said Galyean.
She is excited at the prospect of soon bringing her newly adopted son home.
“We are at the last step (of the adoption process),” said Galyean.
She said her husband will have to appear in the Congolese court at least one more time before the adoption is finalized. She said they will be notified when to go to Africa and she estimated it would be about four weeks that Barry Galyean would spend in Africa before returning home with their newly adopted son.
She said that, once the Congolese authorities are satisfied and all of the necessary documentation for the adoption process has been completed, “They will give us about one week to get things in order.”
She said the family is excited about the adoption and is eager for their new son to arrive.
“We wanted it to be before Christmas, but most likely it will be sometime after Christmas,” said Michelle.
She said the 5K is about more than just helping her family.
“This ministry we’re hoping will become an annual event rasing money every year to be able to help other local people who are interested in international adoption to bring their child home,” said Galyean.
Anyone interested in participating in the 5K event should come to the event on Saturday morning and register, or a monetary donation can be made to the Bladen Baptist Association earmarked for the Galyean adoption. For information, call 336-363-4180 or 335-363-4170 — or email email@example.com.
