DUBLIN — Bladen County Commissioner Charles Ray Peterson is the newest member of the Bladen Community College team as director of customized training.
In this capacity, Peterson will be in charge of developing and implementing training programs for businesses and industries in the county. Prior to coming to BCC he had worked at DuPont Fayetteville Works for 34 years.
A native and lifelong resident of Bladen County, Peterson graduated from Bladenboro High School, where he was active in sports. Following high school, he enrolled at Bladen Community College (then Bladen Technical Institute), where he played both baseball and basketball. The following year he transferred to Southeastern Community College to play baseball. Following his time at Southeastern, he completed a bachelor of science in health, physical education and recreation at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 1979.
He had planned to become a teacher and had begun his student teaching when he was offered a position with DuPont. He worked for the company, primarily in quality and training, until his retirement this year.
Over the years he has been active in numerous community service activities including in two county elected offices. He served on the Board of Education for 12 years before being elected to the Board of County Commissioners 11 years ago. In 2007 he was appointed by his fellow commissioners to serve on the Bladen Community College Board of Trustees, where he served until resigning earlier this year. While a county commissioner, he has also served on the Bladen County Hospital Board and the Consolidated Health Board.
Peterson said he is anxious to get out and visit the various businesses and industries around the county and become familiar with their individual operations and training needs.
Peterson and his wife, Susan, have three grown children and one granddaughter.
Bladen Community College provides customized training to fit the needs of the various businesses and industries in the county. This includes designing and implementing training programs for a variety of skills and functions, often on-site. Over the years, the college has provided training to thousands of employees across the county. BCC’s Customized Training program is a function of the Continuing Education division of the college.
