ELIZABETHTOWN — The annual enrollment period for Medicare is now under way and folks are encouraged to enroll now through Dec. 7.
Amy Ruffin, director of the Bladen County Senior Center, said, “They can come in and we can ensure they have the correct drug plan.”
She explained that the staff at the Senior Center is trained through the Seniors Health Insurance Program to be able to assist folks in deciding which Medicare plan best fits their needs.
“We can’t make the decision for them (and) help them to enroll in the right plan,” said Ruffin.
Ruffin said the enrollment period began on Oct. 15 and it has been busy with folks coming in.
She asked that folks interested in enrolling in Medicare call the Senior Center at 910-872-6330 to schedule an appointment. They will need to bring to their appointment their Medicare card —the red, white and blue card— and a list of the current medicines they are taking.
According to Medicare’s website, this enrollment period is the time when folks are allowed to make any changes to their Medicare coverage. If you are satisfied with your current coverage, then you don’t have to do anything, according to the website.
Also, the Senior Center has other activities coming up, as well.
Ruffin said that the Senior Center will hold its annual Fall Festival on Friday, Nov. 8, from 2 until 6 p.m.
“There will be various vendors on hand,” said Ruffin.
She added that the fall festival will serve as a fundraiser for the center. Ruffin said there will be handmade quilts, mats, and other items. She said the seniors will have their own booth and there will be booths from other folks around town.
“There will be barbecue plates available,” said Ruffin. “All proceeds go to the Senior Center.”
She said the proceeds will be used to provide a Christmas dinner for the seniors.
