ELIZABETHTOWN — Florence McKoy has seen and done a lot of things in her lifetime, and that list is a lot longer than most folks’. That’s because, on Sunday, McKoy celebrated her 113th birthday.

A resident of Poplar Heights on U.S. 701 South, McKoy originally hailed from the Turnbull community of Bladen County and is the oldest living person in Bladen County.

“She’s just wonderful,” said Audrey Nicholson, who has served as McKoy’s nurse for the past six years. “Despite her age, she is one of the healthiest residents here.”

Nicholson said McKoy rarely ever complains about aches and pains, and has never had any kind of serious medical scare since she has been here.

“About the only thing she ever says is that she is tired,” Nicholson said. “She’s still very with it; her mind is sharp — she’s just hard of hearing, is all.”

Nicholson said that she was once told that McKoy’s secret to a long life was that she had only one child. Over the past several years, McKoy has enjoyed television and the church services at Poplar Heights.

McKoy spent her birthday with family and staff of Poplar Heights.
