Bladen We Care gives thanks

March 4, 2014

As we begin the celebration of our 25th year of service to residents of Bladen County, I have been thinking of where we have come from and why we have been so successful.

In March of 1989, a small group of us got together to discuss having a fundraiser to assist individuals suffering illnesses, many with no insurance, and some not eligible for any assistance, literally falling through the “cracks” in our health care system.

It did not take long for us to agree that we wanted to service only residents from Bladen County, since there was such a need.

We decided to try our hand at a one-day gold tournament, with all the work being done by volunteers. The support we received from business and players was surprising, since we had no history and were new at this type of tournament.

Since that first tournament, our support has grown regionally — not only from companies, but also many players coming out of our area to play along with local golfers in this fun event.

Our service to patients has expanded to other areas and other organizations that assist us in reaching medical needs here in Bladen County. Today, after 25 years, we have been blessed to enjoy how our efforts have made a difference in many lives all over this great county.

We thank everyone who has assisted us in many ways, and especially Ann Nye, who, through her unselfish efforts, has taken all of our calls for assistance over the entire 25 years We truly could not have handled all these cases without Ann.

To our board and volunteers, I thank you for being a part of the program created by Bladen We Care to service the needs in our county.

To all our supporters, a huge thank-you because, without your support, we would not have the resources to offer the assistance that we are able to through our grants.

We are a blessed county due to a lot of effort and work by many. Thank you, Bladen County!

This year’s events will include our 25th year celebration at Lu Mil Vineyard on April 11, as well as the Bladen We Care/Byron Gooden Golf Tournament on April 24 at River landing Country Club in Wallace.
