Caregiver seminar to help deal with stress planned

ELIZABETHTOWN — There will be a workshop for caregivers on Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon at the Powell-Melvin Building located on Smith Circle in Elizabethtown. The workshop is free, open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

“What we try to do, at least yearly, is to bring something that is informative and very timely depending on what you are going through,” said Lisa Clark with Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center. “There are lots of different disease processes people have. A lot of people are care giving in different ways.”

The presenter for the seminar will be Mike Collins, who is a faculty member in the UNC School of Business. Collins produced the video “Care for the Caregiver” and it is sponsored by the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center.

Clark said that when Collins and his brother found themselves in a caregiver role, he learned that there was not a lot of information on self-care for those in a caregiver role.

According to a press release, the focus of the program is caregiver health and helping folks to become more effective in their roles as caregivers. During the seminar, Collins will address things such as stress management, mental health and physical health as it pertains to caregivers.

“This is a wealth of knowledge for caregivers,” said Clark of the seminar.

During the seminar, Collins will teach caregivers how to identify the five areas that stress impacts—health, head, heart, home and hands. You will learn how to use a notebook to keep track of thoughts and emotions as well as how to talk to other family members and friends who aren’t involved in care giving. Collins will also offer you strategies on how to talk to your boss about your new role in your life.

Collins will also teach you how to prevent becoming overwhelmed in your role as a caregiver.

During the seminar you will learn how to cope with crises and conflicts as they may arise due to your role as caregiver.

Collins will also address such tings as how to get everything done and still retain time for yourself as well as “knowing when it’s time to simply let go.”

“He is funny. Very animated and it is a lively discussion. Anybody could benefit,” said Clark.
