FAYETTEVILLE — Cumberland County Health Department Director Buck Wilson resigned this week, effective July 7, and Board of Health members accepted his resignation.

Board of Health member Vikki Andrews said Wilson “has done a very good job for the community.”

Wilson said last week that he was planning to leave because of a personal situation.

Town approves

its new budget

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a $1.7 million budget that gives town employees a pay raise and keeps the property tax rate the same.

The spending plan, approved on a 4-2 vote, provides employees a 2.5 percent pay hike. It keeps the property tax at 73 cents for every $100 of property and keeps water, sewer and garbage fees the same.

Commissioners Terry Evans, Monte McCallum, Cassandra Gaddy and Felecia A. McLean-Kesler voted in favor of the budget, with Charles Kemp and J.J. McCree voting against.

Inmate walks away

from work detail

TABOR CITY — Authorities are searching for a 59-year-old prisoner who went missing during a work assignment on Tuesday.

Ricky Robinson, 59, is a black male serving time as a habitual felon at the Tabor City Correctional Institution. He was scheduled to be released in 2021.

Robinson reportedly walked away from his assignment as a janitor in Whiteville.

Teen is charged

in threat case

CLINTON — A teenager who allegedly made a school-related threat of violence in April has been charged in connection with the incident, during which Sampson Middle School and Clinton High School were locked down for a time.

Joshua Damon Newton, 16, of Clinton, was charged last week with false report of mass violence on educational property. His bond was set at $3,000 secured and he was given a court date of June 30.

Newton was reportedly bonded out immediately by a bail bondsman and was not placed in the Sampson County Detention Center.
