ELIZABETHTOWN — Two Bladen County students are the recipients of a $1,000 scholarship.
At East Bladen High School’s awards day, East Bladen’s Ross Johnson and West Bladen’s Melina Wilkins each received $1,000 from the Joe Bostic/Lacy West East Carolina University Memorial Scholarship.
“Joe and Lacy were both ECU alumni, avid ECU supporters, and instrumental figures in Bladen County,” said Cheryl West, daughter-in-law of Lacy West. “Sadly, both lives were gone way too soon, so, to honor their legacy, this scholarship was established by many family and friends in their honor.”
Awarded annually to two Bladen County students planning to attend East Carolina University — one from each of Bladen County’s two high schools — the award helps students with their academic responsibilities. Applications are submitted to students’ respective guidance departments, and winners are chosen by a scholarship committee at East Carolina University. The scholarship continues to be funded through donations through an annual pancake dinner.
Johnson and Wilkins were awarded their scholarship money by Alan West, son of Lacy West and a Bladen County Schools Board of Education member.
“We want to congratulate Ross and Melina and wish them the very best at ECU,” remarked Cheryl West.
