ASHEVILLE — A man going through a woman’s vehicle in a Wal-mart parking lot got more than he bargained for when the woman chased him, then literally ran over him with her vehicle.

The incident happened Wednesday in Asheville, N.C. Christine Braswell, 26, came out of the store and caught the man, identified as Robert Raines, 34, rummaging through her red-orange SUV.

Braswell, who is five months pregnant, first started chasing Raines, who had stolen her purse from her vehicle. Unable to run far, she then jumped into her vehicle, threw it into gear, and took off after him.

WLOS ABC13 News posted a notice on Facebook, saying, “Our cameras were there yesterday when a woman chased a man and hit him with her SUV in a Walmart parking lot after she says he attempted to steal her purse.”

The video posted shows the moment Braswell sped across the parking lot in pursuit of Raines, as he fled, until she literally ran into him. The purse can be seen flying up into the air.

“Being five months pregnant, I chased a little ways, then come back, jumped in the car, threw it in gear and came across the curb and ran him over. I was not going to let him get away with it. It’s not right, it’s not fair,” said Braswell afterward.

She was charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, and Raines is charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny and misdemeanor damage to property.

Defense attorney Steve Lindsay told ABC13 News that Braswell can’t claim self-defense because Raines was running away, but added that there would be no attempted murder charge because it was not premeditated.

Raines was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.
