ELIZABETHTOWN — A Bladen County man found hiding under bed linens in his home was arrested and charged with the murder of his girlfriend on Saturday.
According to Chief Deputy Rodney Hester with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, a woman was taken to Bladen County Hospital’s emergency room at about 2 a.m. by a man who requested assistance.
“Hospital medical personnel retrieved (the woman) from the vehicle and took her into the emergency room,” Hester said. “(She) was already deceased when she arrived …”
The woman was identified as Mary Ellen Council, 40, of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Elizabethtown. Hester said the cause of death would not be released until after an autopsy was performed in Raleigh this week.
“The black male drove off from the hospital and did not return,” Hester said. “(But) investigators were able to identify Kelvin Donta McKeithan, 33, of Elkton Road in Clarkton as being the … male that had dropped Council off at the hospital. … Council and McKeithan had been in a relationship for the past several years.”
Investigators went to McKeithan’s home and found him hiding underneath bed linens. He was taken into custody and booked into the Bladen County Jail without bond.
The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Elizabethtown Police Department, Clarkton Police Department, N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, the District Attorney’s Office, Bladen County Coroner’s Office, Elizabethtown Fire Department, Lisbon Fire Department and Bladen County EMS.
