ELIZABETHTOWN — While Elizabethtown police officers were investigating another crime scene on Sunday at about 1:38 a.m., gunshots rung out from someplace nearby.
“Officers responded to the area of Della and James streets, about two blocks away, and located subjects in the area and spent shells in the street,” Police Chief Bobby Kinlaw said. “While investigating, officers learned that a subject had (arrived) at Bladen County Hospital (with a gunshot wound).”
According to investigators, the victim, a 34-year-old woman, and others were in the yard talking when a group of individuals walked by. Words were exchanged and, after the group was down the street a short distance, one of them started firing shots at the group in the yard.
Officers were able to locate and arrest Marcus Orlando Smith, 25, of Elizabethtown and charged him with attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was booked into the Bladen County Jail under a $550,000 secured bond.
