KELLY — A Bladen County member was arrested and charged with setting fire to two separate mobile homes earlier this month.

According to Bladen County Sheriff Jim McVicker, the woman was angry with a relative and set the fires to the structures along TV Tower Road in Kelly on Oct. 11.

“Witnesses saw Jackie Cheryl Melvin approach a mobile home she had recently been asked to move from by a family member, break out windows, pour gas into the mobile home and set it on fire,” said Sheriff McVicker. “She then set fire to a second home that was being lived in, but the occupant was not in the home at the time of the fire.”

The sheriff added that witnesses gave responding deputies the woman’s name, as well as a description of her vehicle.

Melvin, 47, of Kelly was arrested without incident about 5 miles from the fires and charged with one count of second-degree arson an one count of burning certain buildings. She was booked into the Bladen County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond on the arson charge.

She was also served with three misdemeanor failure to appear warrants and given a $3,600 secured bond on those charges.

According to the report, each of the two mobile homes sustained about $5,000 in damages.
