Bladen County Public Library, WBLA offering a Story Writing Contest for students

Staff report

Students in Bladen County are being asked to sharpen their pencils and imaginations to enter the first Story Writing Contest hosted by the Bladen County Public Library and Giddie’s Story Time on WBLA-AM.

The contest will be divided into specific grade levels — first through third grades; fourth through sixth grades; seventh through ninth grades; and 10th through 12th grades.

The genre for the contest should be appropriate for children in grades kindergarten through the fifth grade. Those exceeding that level may be omitted. There is no limit on the length of stories, but only one entry will be accepted per student.

The stories must be postmarked or hand-delivered to any Bladen County library branch by Oct. 31. Prizes will be given to first-, second- and third-place winners in each grade division — and each will be invited to read their entry on the air at WBLA during Giddie’s Story Time, which airs live each Friday at 8 a.m. The student’s school and teacher will also be recognized.

Those entries that are judged to be honorable mentions will have the author’s name announced on the air and their school recognized.

It will be important for students to include their name, school, grade level and a way to be contacted with their entry.

The local sponsors of the Story Writing Contest are: Bladen Office Supply, the Bladen Journal, Bladenboro Hardware, Fowler Jewelry of Elizabethtown, Leinwand’s of Elizabethtown, Ray’s Furniture & Jewelry, Signlogic, Smellie Bloomers, WBLA and Yia Yia’s Gifts & More.
