ELIZABETHTOWN — At precisely 4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, a distinct gong was heard in towns and counties across the United States in honor of Constitution Week. And donwtown Elizabethtown was treated to that very same gonging.
The Battle of Elizabethtown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsored the local event, which was held at the Bladen County Courthouse. The bell on the northeast corner of the front lawn was rung a total of 226 times — once for each year the U.S. Constitution has been in place, according to Jane Ross, the chapter’s chairperson.
Several youth and teens rang the bell, some of whom were members of the 4-H Club.
“We have a lot to be thankful for for those men (who wrote the Constitution),” said Ross.
Judy Gooden opened the event with the recitation of the preamble to the Constitution. After the recitation the youth and teens took turns ringing the bell about 10 times each.
