LUMBERTON — A Rowland man arrested Friday afternoon on an assault charge was taken to the hospital after being attacked in his cell, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

James Leonard Carter, 42, was treated Friday evening at the Robeson County Detention Center’s nurse’s station then taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center with bruises on his face and a head wound, according to a police report.

According to Maj. George Kenworthy, administrator at the jail, Carter made his $1,000 bond after he returned from the hospital and was released. Kenworthy said Carter’s injuries and the incident were minor.

According to the report, Carter was lying in his bunk with a sheet over his head when another inmate, Hoza Locklear, threatened to beat him up if he didn’t give him his cafeteria tray when it arrived in the morning. Carter told Locklear it wasn’t “going to go down like that,” the report said.

The report said two other inmates came over and put a towel over the window in the cell and Locklear slapped Carter in the face. Carter got up and all three men began “beating him about the body and banging his head up against the steel cage,” the report said,

Carter was forced to the ground while the men continued to kick him.

A jail employee, Jonathon Oxendine, was collecting mop buckets shortly afterward when he heard a banging sound. Oxendine went over to Carter’s cell and saw he was bleeding from the head, the report said.

Carter was taken to see the nurse.

Carter was charged with assault inflicting serious injury and taken to the jail at about 3 p.m. that day. No information regarding the incident that led to his arrest was available on Monday.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, Carter was convicted on the same charge in 2009 and spent five months in jail.
