LAURINBURG — Of about 200 people stopped Saturday by the Scotland County Sheriff’s Offices’ Neighborhood Improvement Team, one person was arrested and nine others charged with citations.

Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Jacobs said that about 13 deputies started setting up traffic checkpoints around 8 p.m. in Laurel Hill, East Laurinburg, Gibson and Wagram.

“It was a collaboration of the whole department,” Jacobs said. “We were there to support each other. It was a collaborative effort to make this community a safer place.”

Three drivers were charged for not having their registrations; one for driving without a licence; one for driving with a suspended license; two for driving while license revoked. One driver was arrested for driving while impaired and two juveniles were charged with underage drinking.

Checkpoints were set up on Fourth, Ninth and 11th streets in East Laurinburg; 11th St. in Laurel Hill; Church, North Main and Cross streets in Gibson and Riverton, River, Airbase and McLaughlin Roads in Wagram.

According to Jacobs, Christopher McCusker, 27, of 9440 Andrew Jackson Highway, was arrested and charged Saturday night for driving while impaired and was released into the custody of a family member at the magistrate’s office.

Two juveniles, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, who were passengers in the car with McCusker, received citations with mandatory court dates for underage drinking. They were released into the custody of their guardians.

Carolyn Herring-Harris, 26, of 26355 Cliff Gibson Road in Marston, and Clayton Wright III, 25, of 9681 Old Wire Road in Laurel Hill, received citations for driving while license revoked.

Barry Horton, 51, of 6034 Black Bear Court in Charlotte, received a citation for driving while license suspended and Robert Pipkin, 34, of 9101 McFarland Road in Laurel Hill, received a citation for driving without a license.

Allena Thrower, 32, of 163 Wiggins Road in Rockingham, Brett Williams, 32, of 21660 Omaha Hill Drive, and Dameion McIntyre, 18, of 9461 Third St. in Laurel Hill, received citations for having no registration.

Jacobs said that based on the information, complaints and tips the sheriff office receives daily from Scotland County residents, the department was able to determine specific “troubled areas” and target those locations.
