LUMBERTON — A 3-year-old boy died this weekend when he fell out of his parents’ car and was struck by a tire.

Bryston Jacobs was reaching for leaves on trees and bushes just after 7 p.m. on Saturday when he tumbled out of a back window and onto Jacobsville Road, according to Sgt. Scottie Chavis of the state Highway Patrol.

“It’s just so unfortunate that it was a 3-year-old and it’s just really sad. You kind of feel for the parents,” said Chavis, who responded to the accident.

Chavis said Jacobs had unbuckled his child-restraint seat.

Jacobs’ family, who lives on Titman Road, met Emergency Medical Services on N.C. 211 while on their way to the hospital. Chavis said the dirt road has a lot of potholes, and it’s possible the child fell out as the car was weaving to avoid them.

Chavis said the car was traveling at about 5 mph when the back right tire struck Jacobs.

Jacobs’ mother and father, Aaron Jacobs and Mary Ivey, and his brother, Eli Jacobs, were in the car and were unharmed.

A fund-raising site has been set up with a goal of raising $1,000 for the family. Cici’s Pizza, where the family ate regularly, is also collecting donations. To donate, visit gofundme.com/8v8ev0 or Cici’s Pizza, located at 3221 Fayetteville Road.

“I found out when one of my employee asked, ‘Do you think we can do something for them?” and I said yes,” said Ralph Delvalle, the manager at CiCi’s.

Delvalle said he’s always willing to help, especially when it comes to a family he and his coworkers see often.

Since Monday night, the restaurant has collected about $50 for the family in a donation box on the counter. On Tuesday, CiCi’s will donate 15 percent of that day’s sales to the family.
