FAYETTEVILLE — The Fayetteville Obesrver’s sports staff dipped into Bladen County for three selections to its annual All-Cape Fear Region prep softball teams, and one of those selections landed on the first team.

Nicole Wyatt, who twirled 159.1 of West Bladen’s 165 total innings this past season, was tabbed for the All-Cape Fear Region first team.

The Lady Knights’ junior was 20-5 in the circle, posting a 0.83 ERA and held opposing hitters to a .159 batting average during the season. She had 11 shutouts during the season, fanned 193 batters, gave up just 19 earned runs, walked only 19 batters and gave up 95 total hits.

Wyatt was also one of West Bladen’s top hitters, often from the No. 5 slot in the lineup. She finished with a .360 batting average and had four doubles, a home run and 18 RBI.

Also selected by The Fayetteville Observer from West Bladen was third-baseman Taylor Stephens, a senior who was chosen for the second team.

Stephens, who hit second in the order for the Lady Knights, finished her season with a .500 batting average with seven doubles, two triples and 12 RBI. She also scored 34 runs and had 31 stolen bases in 31 attempts.

The All-Cape Fear Region’s second team also included catcher Lexi Dawson of East Bladen.

At the plate, Dawson often hit cleanup in the batting order and finished with a .500 batting average that included seven doubles and two triples, as well as 13 runs scored and 15 RBI.

West Bladen finished the season 20-5 overall after a two-game run into the Class 2-A playoffs and 10-4 in the Four County Conference. East Bladen finished 9-8 overall after making its first playoff appearance in six seasons, and 7-7 in the Four County Conference.
