Microsoft recently announced it will no longer support Windows XP with security updates after April 8, 2014. So in six months, those who are running Windows XP will be extremely vulnerable to hackers, and invasive programs which can lead to identity theft.

Those who ignore their security by using Windows XP to do online banking or make credit-card purchases after April 8, 2014, will face a very high probability of having their bank accounts drained. Some statistics indicate as many as 30 percent of computers in use are still running Windows XP.

Be aware that virus writers and hackers are working overtime to prepare for April 9, 2014, and it would behoove those running Windows XP to start planning to migrate to another operating system, or take other steps, before April 8, 2014. Anti-virus programs and anti-spyware programs will not protect Windows XP users from the vulnerabilities of Windows XP which the hackers will be exploiting starting April 9, 2014.

The timing to end security updates for Windows XP could not be worse. There are a many people who will use Windows XP computers to file their taxes online up to April 15, 2014. That is the absolute worst thing they could do. It will provide all the information needed to steal that person’s identity and empty their bank accounts.

There are alternative actions that can be taken to continue to use Windows XP with all the printers and cameras and other peripheral equipment that users invested in without having to buy a new computer or operating system. To explain those steps would take more space than allowed here.

Jim Newman
