Writer has problem with school
This is an issue I am concerned with: At Elizabethtown Primary, the principal is now making the students sit on the floor and up against the wall in the mornings before the bell rings for them to go to their classes. I believe this is wrong.
First off, the floor is cold and, even though it may look clean, it is not. Our children are not animals. There are some children who have health problems who can’t sit on a cold floor.
Then, once they are sitting down, of course they have their bookbags on and the principal is saying don’t scratch the walls. Have you ever known children to sit still and not move?
A lot of us parents feel like this is military school — don’t talk, walk a straight line, shirts tucked in. They already have to wear certain color uniform. I believe it would be OK for the shirts to be any color with collars as long as there is no logo on them and they are clean and neat. The color of the pants, yes … black, khaki, or dark blue, even olive green. And dressy jeans should be allowed, but not carpenter jeans as they have too many pockets. There are some nice jeans out there and some are not that expensive; actually, some are cheaper than the dress pants required.
Now the school is saying if they wear long-sleeve shirts under their uniform shirts they have to be the same color and even their coats. Does it look like we can afford to go out and buy all this new stuff? There are some of us who are on fixed incomes and a lot of us can’t afford to go out and buy this. I am waiting for the next thing for them to change the shoes.
A lot of us are out of work, and we try to live day by day. I think the parents should have a say in al the changes for the school uniforms, being that we are the ones having to pay for all this. Don’t get me wrong, I do believe in education. I just want everyone to understand whatever looks good on paper does not and is not always what is best.
I hope that whoever is in charge can think about the consequences before putting the act into effect. What I am saying is, put yourself in their place. Let’s all come to an agreement on this.
