Tuesday’s local roundup: UNCP gets 3rd televised game
CHARLOTTE — The No. 13 University of North Carolina at Pembroke will get a third televised game this season.
Saturday’s game against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is set to be televised locally in the Charlotte area by WCCB-TV – a CW Network affiliate – station officials announced Monday. Kickoff is set for noon.
Ryan Rose will handle the play-by-play duties for the game and former Carolina Panther standout Kenny Moore will be the color analyst. Brandon Davidow will handle the sideline reporter duties.
UNCP’s season opener against then-No. 5 Winston Salem State on September 5 at home was nationally televised by the CBS Sports Network. The Braves will also play top-ranked and defending national champion Valdosta State on Nov. 7 in a game that will be televised regionally by Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast.
Charlotte (4-2), a current member of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Series (FCS), moved to 4-2 last week after a 53-51 home victory over then-No. 24 Gardner-Webb.
Fairmont beats Whiteville
WHITEVILLE — The Fairmont volleyball team edged out Whiteville in a four-set match on Monday. Neither team won a set by more than three points, with the Golden Tornadoes taking it 25-23, 26-24, 22-25, and 25-22.
Christa Thorndyke led Fairmont (11-1, 15-2 Three Rivers Conference) with 22 assists and Marsha Clewis had 14 kills . Reva Locklear and Courtney McCormick each finished with 8 digs. Whiteville won the junior varsity match.
Scotland sweeps Lumberton
LAURINBURG — The Lumberton volleyball team struggled to finish kills in a straight-set loss to Scotland.
The Pirates (12-6, 4-5 Southeastern Conference) lost 25-21, 25-21, 25-13. It was the second time the Scots have swept the Pirates this year.
“I thought we had our chances the first two games,” said Lumberton coach Jeff McLamb.
The problem lied in hitting, with Lumberton’s kill leader, Kayla Kerns, finishing with only four. Katlyn Singletary had four blocks.
The Pirates wrap up the regular season with matches against South Robeson today and Purnell Swett on Thursday.
Rain postpones soccer games
LUMBERTON — Rain within Robeson County and surrounding areas caused Monday’s soccer games to be postponed.
Lumberton’s home conference game against Hoke was rescheduled to tonight at 7 p.m. Red Springs and South Columbus will be played at 6 p.m. tonight in Red Springs. St. Pauls against Whiteville will be played on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Whiteville.
