ATLANTIC BEACH — “Rodney’s ride for Amelia” ended Saturday in Atlantic Beach after a week-long journey that began in Spruce Pine.

The ride across the state covered approximately 500 miles. Local cyclists from the Cape Fear Cyclist Club called Lake Shore Riders helped Rodney Collier of White Oak raise more than $4,000 for the family through per-mile-donations.

Collier, David Rockwell and Mitchell Edwards completed the entire ride, while riders Alan and Dawn Maynard joined the group in Goldsboro for the last two days of the ride. The last two days included a “Century Ride” into New Bern for a total of 167 miles to the finish line in Atlantic Beach.

The family and church members greeted the cyclists at the finish line in Atlantic Beach wearing their pink shirts to show their support. Ameila Roberson is the daughter of Lane and Kristen Roberson of White Oak. Ameila was born with spina bifida and spent the first two months of her life in Duke University Medical Center.

Collier decided he wanted to ride for a cause and raise money to help the local family.
