ELIZABETHTOWN — The Elizabethtown Council voted this week to disapprove a request made by Steven Ussery to rezone property on Alexander/Walker Street from R-20 to R-10.

An R-20 designation allows multi-family apartments, condominiums, or town houses, said Town Manager Eddie Madden. Changing the zoning to R-20 would have permitted more units per acre.

Madden said several people spoke at the meeting and a protest petition was filed.

“The result of the protest petition was, if the motion was to approve the rezoning, it had to pass by a super majority rather than a simple majority,” said Madden.

“The board voted unanimously to disapprove the rezoning request based on the fact that it is consistent with 1996 land use plan it is not in the best interests of the town at this time,” said Madden.

— The board voted to allow town staff to submit a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund Grant application for Leinwand Park that will include improvements to the property recently purchased by the town on Swanzy Street, across from Leinwand Park. Some of the planned improvements for Leinwand Park and the Swanzy Street property include parking, a crosswalk between the existing ball fields at Leinwand Park and the new parking area, an area with a small water feature, tennis courts, shuffle board, horse shoes, work on the soccer fields, and a few other features that will provide recreation for any age group.

— The town also recognized several employees for their longevity of service during the noon work session. Recognized for five years of service were Madden, Jan Lennon, Pat DeVane, Cameron Kinlaw, and Hollis Freeman. Recognized for 10 years of service were Sarah Baysden, Mark McMichael, and Kip Hester. Recognized for 15 years of service was Byron Graham.
