ELIZABETHTOWN — Produce farmers and local food producers are encouraged to attend a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 5 p.m. at the Bladen County Cooperative Extension Office regarding a new marketing opportunity for locally grown produce and products.

“Down East Connect” was established as a non-profit in Columbus County in 2011 in order to allow farmers to sell their produce and locally produced goods over the Internet to retail customers in the Wilmington area. Since its inception, farmers from Columbus and surrounding counties have earned more than $100,000 selling their products through the “Down East Connect” website.

With increasing demand, the need to expand and reach other farmers has become necessary. “Down East Connect” serves farmers from Columbus and all surrounding counties and is looking to inform more farmers of the opportunity they have with this exciting and innovative marketing tool.

Representatives from “Down East Connect” will be on-hand to discuss the history of the program, as well as how the website works in conjunction with individual farmers produce sales and the bi-weekly delivery schedule.

Representatives will also be available to answer any and all questions any interested producers may have.
