BLADENBORO — The Bladenboro Town Council will resume their meeting from last Monday when it gathers at 7 p.m. tonight to discuss the organizational structure of the town and consider the possibility of appointing a commissioner as a liaison with the town’s departments.
“It (the organizational structure) is something one of the commissioners has requested be discussed,” said Mayor Rufus Duckworth.
He added the board will also be doing some interviews for a wastewater technician Tuesday evening as well.
During last week’s meeting, the board appointed Pam Bowen as the tax collector for the town.
Also during last Monday’s meeting, things became contentious when the issue of appointing a member of the board to the Lumber River Council of Governments came up.
Commissioner Everett Butler had been appointed in November by former Mayor Livingston Lewis to serve on the LRCOG, but when that was pointed out to Commissioner Billy Ray Benson, he told the board he was unaware that Butler was appointed to the position. Commssioner Terry Nance asked Butler if he would serve as an alternate for the LRCOG and Butler said “no.”
Butler said he would resign his position on the LRCOG and excused himself from the vote.
Councilman Billy Ray Benson said, “This is the first I heard of Livingston appointing you to Council of Government.”
Councilman Terry Nance said, “I can see why the mayor would want to be on it.”
“If you want to dismiss me, I’ll step down and let Commissioner Benson have his way,” said Butler in frustration.
A motion was made and the board voted in favor of appointing Mayor Rufus Duckworth and Mayor Pro Tem Sarah Jane Benson to the LRCOG.
The public meeting begins tonight at 7 p.m. at the town hall.
