ELIZABETHTOWN — Bladen County dodged being dealt another major wintery blow as a storm pushed its way into North Carolina and through Bladen County on Monday, bringing with it a seasonal mix of wind and freezing drizzle.

The winter weather forced some delays on Tuesday morning, as Bladen County Schools and many surrounding counties operated on a two-hour delay due to the dire weather predictions. Elizabethtown Educational Ministries operated on a one-hour delay Tuesday.

Bladen County was placed under a winter weather advisory at 7 a.m. Monday and remained under that advisory until noon on Tuesday. Forecasters had predicted a 100-percent chance for sleet and freezing rain overnight Monday and continuing through Tuesday morning with accumulation of a one-tenth to one-quarter inch of ice. While there were no heavy ice accumulations, bridges and overpasses were a concern on Tuesday for the morning commute to work.

N.C. Department of Transportation District Engineer Drew cox said there were no issues with roadways in Bladen County.

“We had a skeleton crew in case we saw any issues,” said Cox.

He added that there was not an expectation of a lot of accumulation and that came to fruition.

Temperatures reached into the mid 60s in Bladen County during the day on Monday, but rapidly fell to near freezing by early evening, according to the National Weather Service website.

At about 8 p.m. Monday, Duke Progress Energy’s outage map showed about 2,000 customers were without power briefly in Bladen County. As of Tuesday morning, all power was reported to have been restored, according to the Duke Progress Energy website.

The forecast for the rest of the week called for rain Wednesday and Thursday before giving way to clouds and some sun for Friday. The weekend also looks better, with sunshine and temperatures near the 70-degree mark.
