ELIZABETHTOWN — Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8062 will once again be distributing their Buddy Poppies at two locations on Saturday, May 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event will take place in front of both Walmart and Tractor Supply on West Broad Street in Elizabethtown, where the local VFW members will be accepting donations.
“VFW by-laws state that the proceeds from Poppy distributions must be used to benefit disabled and needy veterans and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans,” said Post 8062 Commander Neal Bullard.
“What better way to help our veterans in the community than by distributing this little flower of remembrance,” he added. “We encourage everyone in our community to stop by … and get a Buddy Poppy to help honor the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
Founded in 1899, the VFW is the nation’s oldest major veteran’s organization with more than 1.7 million members.
In 1923, the VFW became the first veteran’s organization to promote a nationally organized campaign for the annual distribution of Buddy Poppies, which are assembled by disabled or hospitalized veterans. More than 14 million Poppies are assembled.
