PEMBROKE — When Chancellor Kyle and Sarah Carter decided to establish an endowment at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, they could have chosen any number of worthy programs.
They chose to direct their endowment earnings to the theater and dance programs, because of a lifelong interest in the arts and their admiration for what faculty and students have accomplished in these programs.
“We’ve seen the time and energy the professors put into a production and the commitment of the students,” Sarah said. “It’s humbling to know these students are keeping up with classes and rehearsing hours every night — and many of them aren’t theatre majors.”
The Carter Endowment for Theater and Dance was established with a $20,000 gift and will provide support for The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s Theater, Dance and Musical Theatre programs so they may continue to excel and expand.
“We’ve come to understand how important theater, musical theater and dance are to bringing out the best in individual students,” Kyle Carter said. “Often times, these experiences bring out qualities in students they didn’t think they possessed. My recent experience with ‘Dancing with the Stars’ for the Robeson United Way reinforced how dedicated and masterful these experiences are in bringing out maximum potential.”
“The training gives them a presence and confidence these often shy students would never have had,” Sarah said.
Funds will be used to benefit students in any number of ways, from purchase of materials for sets, costumes, food, rights to plays and guest directors-in-residence. The faculty in the programs will be given discretion about how the funds are to be shared among the programs.
The Carters contribution is a perpetual gift to the university and a lasting legacy. It is managed by the university’s endowment.
