To those who are reading this, I have something on my heart I need to share with you. For a while now the Holy Spirit has been nudging me to help obese people by encouraging and empowering them with God’s Word. Up until now I’ve been resisting His leading because of my own obesity. I’ve questioned whether or not I was “hearing” God clearly on this matter. My thinking has been, “It makes no sense whatsoever that God would call me to help others who are obese when I’m morbidly obese myself!”
Yet in my innermost being, my spirit, I know that I’m hearing God’s directions loud and clear.
God’s Word is filled with stories of how He chooses and uses whomever and whatever He wants to further His work. Remember the story of God speaking through an ass? Well He did. And since my mother is always saying I can be as stubborn as a mule …
“And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.
And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? and he said, Nay.
Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of theLord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.”—Numbers 22:28-31 (KJV)
Considering how God used an ass … I’ve decided to stop resisting the promptings of the Holy Spirit. So with weak and trembling knees, I’m stepping outside of my house where for months I’ve tried to hide my morbidly obese body. I’m going to rise up to the call of God on my life by engaging in that which God has called me to do. He has promised that I will not be put to shame. “Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated …”—Isaiah 54:4 (NIV)
Perhaps by now you’re wondering, “Does God really speak to people today in the present twenty-first century? The answer is yes. God still speaks and His sons and daughters still hear.
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.—Isaiah 30:21
The sheep that are My own hear and are listening to My voice; and I know them, and they follow Me.—John 10: 27 (AMP)
And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you.”—Mark 4:24 (ESV)
The one who belongs to God listens and responds to God’s words. You don’t listen and respond, because you don’t belong to God.—John 8:47 (NET)
Hopefully the Scriptures you’ve just read have answered any lingering doubts you might have had regarding God speaking to His own. Now I’ll get to the main purpose of this story.
I’m stepping out in faith now (so that I can’t chicken out later on) by announcing that starting in January 2014 I will be holding weekly meetings (probably in the Clinton area) geared specifically for those who are obese. We must regain control of our appetites. And we can do it…with God’s help. There will be no scales, so no weighing in. And there will be no charge. At this time I don’t know where the meetings will be held or anything else pertaining to the meetings. As January draws nearer and the details become clearer….I’ll pass them on to you.
Now here is what I need from you. If you are interested and think you might attend the meetings, please contact me using the contact information at the end of this story. Your input is very important as it will help me know the size of venue we’ll need.
By the way, the head shot photo of me that accompanies this article — you should know that photo was taken after I’d lost triple digits in weight. Since then I’ve gained the weight back, every single pound of it. But I’m not giving up. I refuse to be enslaved any longer by an out-of-control appetite.
In closing, I extend a very special invitation to you. I’d love to meet you and have you join me in the meetings. Together we’ll learn from God’s Word and begin applying the Word to our lives in a greater measure .. specifically targeting our appetite for food. In the meantime … talk to God. Tell Him exactly how you feel about being obese and don’t hold anything back. And then listen as God speaks to your heart. He loves you so very much. And regardless of what you might think, you’re not too big for God.
