BLADENBORO — The 13th annual Shipman Memorial Fundraising Scholarship Program in loving memory of William Dewey Shipman Sr. and Zenah Mae Clarida Shipman was held on Saturday, Nov. 30, at St. James AME Zion Church in Bladenboro. The theme was “Share the Love.”


The master of ceremony was Carlos JaShon Smith, great-grandson, a freshman at Louisburg College in Louisburg. His brother, TyShon Smith introduced him. Min. Damien Demetrius George, cousin, of Hickory, was the featured guest speaker who referenced “You Have A Choice,” introduced his wife, Evita George.


The special guest choir was Rose Hill AME Zion Church of Whiteville. Fentress George, son of Damien Demetrius George, blessed the service with a solo performance. Blessed Boys, Blessed Girls and Anointed— each group performed an individual spiritual praise dance. There has been a total of 65 scholarships awarded from 2002 until 2013.


The following individuals were awarded scholarships in the amount of $500 for the year 2013. The winners are:


— Kendra Bowen, daughter of William and Mamie Bowen. She is a graduate of East Columbus High School is currently a freshman attending UNC at Chapel Hill pursuing a major in sociology.


— Cameron Daniel, son of Stacey N. Regan. He is a graduate of East Columbus High School and is a freshman at Campbell University at Buies Creek pursuing a major in trust and wealth management.


— Lexus Dudley daughter of Loretta Shipman. She is a graduate of Whiteville High School and is a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro pursuing a major in nursing.


— Kayla Jenkins daughter of Elizabeth Jenkins. She is a graduate of West Columbus High School and is a freshman at North Carolina Central University in Durham pursuing a degree in criminal justice.


— Lakembely McDougal daughter of Debra McDougal. She is a graduate of West Bladen High School and is a freshman at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem where she is pursuing a degree in accounting.


— Carlos Smith son of Valerie Curtis and Dr. Carlos Shipman. He is a graduate of Whiteville High School and is a freshman at Louisburg College of Louisburg where he is pursuing a major in business.
