BLADENBORO — The 17th annual Shipman Memorial Fundraising Scholarship Program, established in memory of William Dewey Shipman Sr. and Zenah Mae Clarida Shipman, was held Nov. 25 at St. James AME Zion Church in the Sandhill Community of Bladenboro — and 10 local students were presented with $500 scholarships.

With the theme of “With God all things are possible,” the evening featured Ashawntia Frink, a student at St. Augustine College in Raleigh, as the mistress of ceremonies. She was introduced by her cousin, Abreana Brown. Awarded scholarships were:

— Ja’Meon Brown of Lake Waccamaw, the son of Stacey N. Regan. He is a graduate of East Columbus High and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a major in business administration.

— Mia Campbell of Clarkton, the daughter of Melody and Michael Campbell. She is a graduate of East Columbus High and attends North Carolina A&T State University with a major in social work.

— Surrayyah Chestnut of Whiteville, the daughter of Sheirra and Franklin Meares. She is a graduate of Whiteville High and attends North Carolina Central University with a major in criminal justice.

— Tyrionna Dockery of Bladenboro, the daughter of Tisheia E. Featherson. She is a graduate of West Bladen High and attends North Carolina Central University with a major in sports medicine and a minor in African-American studies.

— Imani Graham of Whiteville, the daughter of the Rev. Franklin and Minister Cindy Graham. She is a graduate of Whiteville High and attends North Carolina Central University with a major in chemistry.

— Elliott Kenzil McCall of Clarkton the son of Kenzil and Yvette McCall. He is a graduate of East Bladen High and attends Southeastern Community College with a major in welding.

— Queen Amari Mitchell of Council, the daughter of Queen Mitchell. She is a graduate of East Bladen High and attends Oakwood University in Alabama with a major in nursing.

— Malika Page of Elizabethtown, the daughter of Victoria Page and Betty Mclaughlin. She is a graduate of East Bladen High and attends St. Augustine University with a double-major in social work and criminal justice.

— Taylor Scott of Chadourn, the daughter of Stephanie Jackson. She is a graduate of West Columbus High and attends Fayetteville State University with a major in biology.

— Destinee Singletary of Bladenboro, the daughter of Borisce and Bridgette Singletary. She is a graduate of West Bladen High and attends North Carolina A&T State University with a major in biology.

A total of 99 scholarships have been awarded to area students since 2002.

Committee members are the Rev. Viola L. Freeman, Dianne Bellamy, Albert Roseboro, Norma Martin and Chairperson Willa Dean Williams.
