— Aug. 23, 1967: Jerry Kinlaw, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Kinlaw of Bladenboro, wins the first Bladen County 4-H Automotive Skill Driving Contest.
— Aug. 24, 1978: The harvesting of the local tobacco crops causes a delay in the opening of schools in Bladen County by one week.
— Aug. 24, 1987: S&S Tractor of Dublin wins the ASA Regional Women’s Class A Softball Tournament in Cary against 10 other teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. The team will play in the World USSSA Playoffs in Macon, Ga.
— Aug. 22, 2003: A ruptured gas main near Kelly Street in Bladenboro closes schools and forces the evacuation of about 1,000 students, teachers and residents.
— Aug. 22, 2008: Bladen County Sheriff’s Office deputies seize 87 marijuana plants with a street value of $200,000 in the southeast part of the county.
