— Oct. 18, 1967: Col. Mildred Irene Clark, a graduate of Clarkton High School who went on to become chief of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, retires after 30 years of service.


— Oct. 19, 1978: Bobby Roberts assumes the position of Bladen County tax supervisor, taking over for Paul Campbell, who retired in August.


— Oct. 19, 1987: Mary Harvey is crowned Homecoming Queen at east Bladen High School. Shonteea Jones is crowned East Bladen Varsity Sweetheart.


— Oct. 17, 2003: Officials with Harriet & Henderson’s Bladen Plant in Clarkton announce plans to cease operations this month, putting the plant’s 130 employees out of work.


— Oct. 17, 2008: The Bladen County Board of Education votes to begin the search for a new school superintendent after deciding not to extend the contract of Kenneth Dinkins.
