— Jan. 17, 1968: L.D. “Len” Ricks Jr. and R.D. “Dee” Morgan Jr. take over ownership of the Chevrolet dealership on N.C. 87 in Elizabethtown. The new dealership will be known as Ricks-Morgan Chevrolet Inc.


— Jan. 17, 1979: Joy Storms is crowned the new Miss Bladen County. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Storms of Bladenboro. Ginger Strickland of Clarkton is crowned Little Miss Bladen.


— Jan. 18, 1988: Eunice G. Melvin, 72, sells the family business — Melvin’s Bait and Tackle — after 40 years in business in Elizabethtown. The store has been purchased by Rudy lennon.


— Jan. 16, 2004: U.S. Senate candidate Erskine Bowles visits Bladen County, making a stop at Axicore Industries in Bladenboro.


— Jan. 16, 2009: A 19-year-old West Bladen senior from Clarkton is killed during a shooting at McDonald’s on South Poplar Street in Elizabethtown. No arrests were made.
