CLINTON — The West Bladen Knights got hit hard early on Monday, giving up three goals in the first handful of minutes, and went on to lose a 10-1 Four County Conference verdict to Union High.
The Spartans went on to score eight first-half goals for an 8-0 lead at halftime.
West Bladen tallied its lone goal 10 minutes into the second half when Jorcahei Monroy played a throw-in from Seth Britt, juked around a Union defender and bumped the ball into the back of the net.
But the Knights, who brought just 1o players to the match because several had missed a practice last week, couldn’t establish any momentum. Union tallied two goals in the second half to seal the win.
West Bladen goalie Anthony Sebastian, who was under attack all evening, recorded 11 saves in the nets.
— In Dublin on Tuesday, Pender High invaded the Knights’ Castle with an unbeaten Four County Conference record and left the same way after a 25-22, 25-19 and 25-9 sweep of the Lady Knights.
Mallory Davis topped the charts for West Bladen, recording nine kills and three blocks, while teammate Courtney Thompson added four kills and two blocks. None of the Lady Knights had more than five service winners.
— In Dunn on Monday, the Raiders of Midway made a single goal stand up and defeated East Bladen in a Four County Conference match, 1-0.
The Raiders’ goal reportedly came when East Bladen players thought an offsides had occurred, but the whistle never blew to end play until after the goal was scored.
Eagles coach Jay Raynor credited his goalie Matt Massengill for keeping the match close.
— At Clinton on Wednesday, the Eagles took a big hit in Four County Conference play when the Dark Horses blanked East Bladen, 9-0.
Clinton opened a 5-0 lead by halftime and added four goals to seal the win in the second half.
— In Teachey on Wednesday, Wallace-Rose Hill peppered the West Bladen nets with 49 shots on goal and took a 9-0 win from the Knights in Four County Conference action.
The Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead into halftime, then added three quick goals in the second half to end the match.
— In Dublin on Tuesday, the Lady Dark Horses of Clinton earned a 7-2 win in Four County Conference action over West Bladen.
The Lady Knights’ lone points came from wins at No. 2 singles by Alicia Avellaneda, 6-4 and 6-0, and at No. 2 doubles from the tandem of Alanna Ludlum and Madison Staton, 8-5.
Madison Staton took a tough loss at No. 3 singles for West Bladen, dropping a hard-fought 6-4, 5-7, 0-1 (10-7) decision; the Lady Knights duo of Josie Ludlum and Avellaneda also suffered a tough loss at No. 1 doubles, falling 8-6.
