NEWTON GROVE — The Midway Raiders used a huge second quarter to open Four County Conference play with a convincing 71-54 win over visiting East Bladen on Tuesday.
The loss drops the Eagles to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Midway raced out to a 16-3 advantage to open the game, but East Bladen fought back with an 8-0 run to close the quarter and pull within 16-11.
The Raiders put an end to the Eagles’ run quickly in the second stanza and outscored East Bladen by an 18-10 margin to take a 34-21 lead into halftime.
Coach Ken Cross did the only thing he could do at halftime by adjusting to a pressure defense — and it worked. The Eagles narrowed the deficit to seven late in the third quarter and trailed by 46-37 at the start of the final 8 minutes.
But it also ran the Eagles ragged, and Midway owned the fourth quarter — mostly at the free throw line. The Raiders canned 12 of 14 foul shots and easily won the quarter, 25-17, to seal the game.
Jaquan Jones scored 22 points to lead east Bladen, while Farrell Murchison added 13 points.
