TEACHEY — The Lady Knights got a huge second half from Courtney Thompson to beat back an upset threat from Wallace-Rose Hill and claim a 45-35 Four County Conference win on Friday.
West Bladen is now 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Taylor Stephens all but carried the Lady Knights in the first quarter, canning eight points behind two three-pointers, and Miriam Mendoza added a three-pointer that took West Bladen out to a 9-2 lead. The Lady Knights finished the first quarter with an 11-6 edge.
But the Lady Bulldogs fought back in the second quarter. After West Bladen opened a 17-9 lead, Wallace-Rose Hill went on a 9-0 run to take an 18-17 lead before Thompson scored her first basket of the game just before halftime, giving the Lady Knights a 19-18 lead.
That basket awoke Thompson’s offensive game, and she poured in 12 points in the third quarter to propel the Lady Knights to a 34-25 lead heading into the final 8 minutes.
West Bladen opened the final period with a 4-2 spurt and Thompson canned seven points in the quarter to seal the win.
Thompson’s 21 points, along with 13 rebounds, gave the senior her ninth-straight double-double for West Bladen. Stephens finished with 12 points.
