Midway upsets Lady Knights, 41-39
DUNN — Midway took the Lady Knights’ inside game with Courtney Thompson away and, with the help of a tough call at the buzzer, came away with a 41-39 Four County Conference win on Friday.
West Bladen falls to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Lady Raiders improve to 6-8, 4-2.
The Lady Knights got off to an unusual hot start to open the game, racing out to a 7-1 advantage. But Midway finished the first quarter with a 4-0 spurt to pull within 7-5.
The Lady Raiders’ momentum continued into the second stanza, opening the quarter with an 11-7 run to take a 16-14 lead, but West Bladen answered with a 5-0 spurt to regain the lead, 19-16, before Midway finished the first half with a pair of free throws to pull within 19-18 at intermission.
Midway opened the second half with a 5-0 run and, after West Bladen’s 3-0 spurt pulled the Lady Knights to within 23-22, Midway answered with a 4-0 run. But the Lady Knights battled back with a 5-0 spurt highlighted by a trio of free throws by Taylor Stephens to knot the game at 27-27 going into the fourth quarter.
West Bladen opened the final 8 minutes with five free throws to take a 32-27 edge, but Midway came back with a 7-0 spurt for a 34-32 lead.
The final 4 minutes saw the lead continue to change hands until the Lady Raiders claimed a 41-39 edge with just 4 seconds left. West Bladen pushed the ball up quickly and Stephens tossed up a runner along the baseline that fell to knot the game at the buzzer — but she was called for a charge and the points were wiped away, ending the game.
Stephens led the Lady Knights with 12 points, while Breanna Jackson had eight points and 15 rebounds. Thompson was held to just six points, but pulled down 14 rebounds to give her 1,219 for her career and puts her at No. 12 on the state’s all-time career list.
