ELIZABETHTOWN — Larrell Murchison, an East Bladen lineman tuned fullback for the Eagles midway through the season, was recently named to the N.C. Preps Class 2-A All-State Team.
Murchison, a 6-foot, 3-inch, 260-pound junior this past season , was a key blocker for the Eagles’ running game that rushed for 4,102 yards and 43 touchdowns.
His blocking helped his twin brother Farrell Murchison rush for 2,029 yards and 21 touchdowns, and Jaylon Herring rush for 1,283 yards and 14 touchdowns.
“When we moved him from right tackle to fullback, we had a great blocker going to the right or left,” said East Bladen coach Robbie Priest. “At 6-foot, 3-inches and 260 pounds, he was a huge part of the success we had with our ground game …”
After East Bladen started the season 1-5, coach Robbie Priest moved Murchison into the backfield as a fullback and lead blocker. The Eagles went on to win six of their final seven games and finish 7-6 overall. The wins included a 14-7 rematch win over Clinton in the first round of the Class 2-A state playoffs, while the only loss was a 27-24 second-round heartbreaker to Southwest Onslow that fell literally one foot short of being a win.
In addition to his blocking, Murchison also carried the ball 17 times for 97 yards and a touchdown during the season.
“He is a joy to coach and his work ethic is second to none,” Priest said. He added that Murchison will be back at fullback on offense for the 2014 season, where big things will be expected.
Murchison was one of the four players Priest chose in the preseason as players to watch.
