Third-quarter surge lifts Knights

DUBLIN — Long-range bombs by Malcolm Vaught and Rahu Purdie ignited a huge third quarter Friday for West Bladen, sparking a 44-31 Four County Conference win over Union.


The Knights improved to 11-7 overall and 5-3 in the conference.


Neither team lit up the scoreboard much in the opening quarter, but West Bladen managed to open a 9-5 lead going into the second stanza.


The 8 minutes before halftime were not good ones for the home team, as the Spartans outscored West Bladen by a 14-8 margin and took a 19-17 lead into intermission.


But the Knights came out with new-found fire in the second half. Vaught and Purdie each hit long three-pointers, and West Bladen outscored Union 19-4 in the third quarter to build a 36-23 edge going into the fourth quarter. Nate Pryor contributed six points for the Knights in the third quarter, then opened the fourth frame with a basket.


The two teams ended up trading eight points down the stretch, allowing West Bladen to seal the win.


The trio of Pryor, Purdie and Corbin Stanley shared scoring honors for the Knights with 10 points each. Vaught added six points and Xavier McKoy had four
