ROCKY POINT — Free throws let down West Bladen in the fourth quarter and the Knights fell to Heidi Trask, 55-52, in a Four County Conference tilt on Saturday.
The loss drops West Bladen to 11-8 overall and 5-4 in the conference.
The Titans opened the game with an 11-3 run, but West Bladen battled back and used an 11-3 of its own to close the first quarter and knot the game at 14-14.
Edward Owens buried a three-pointer for the Knights in the second quarter, but Trask managed to outscore West Bladen by a 15-12 margin in the period and take a 29-26 lead into intermission.
The Knights put some adjustments into play in the third quarter and edged ahead of the Titans 37-36 with 8 minutes to play.
The two teams went back and forth through the fourth quarter. West Bladen, sparked by a Malcolm Vaught three-pointer, held a one-point lead late and was going to the free throw line — where the shots were missed and opened the door for the Titans, who took advantage.
“We were just 4-of-10 at the line in the fourth quarter, and that was the difference in the game,” said West Bladen coach Travis Pait. “The kids played well; we guarded extremely well and the defense was amazing. But the game was a dogfight and Trask just made one more play than we did.”
Vaught and Owens each scored 12 points to lead West Bladen, and Vaught added five steals. Corbin Stanley contributed 11 points and six rebounds for the Knights.
