ELIZABETHTOWN — A pair of hard-fought championship games were staged Thursday in the Bladen 5 Conference Tournament, and one school managed to sweep the two titles.
Clarkton School of Discovery’s boys and girls teams went into the tournament with a combined 11-1 record, then stormed to the championships.
The Lady Blue Devils completed their season with an 8-0 mark after a 33-29 win over Elizabethtown Middle in the tourney championship; the Blue Devils finished at 7-1 overall and ended their season with a thrilling come-from-behind 44-43 win over a pesky Elizabethtown Middle squad for the tournament title.
Clarkton went up against the Cougars of Elizabethtown Middle School, a team the Blue Devils had defeated twice during the regular season, and quickly found out they were in a tough game.
The Cougars jumped out an early 9-1 lead and didn’t appear willing to give it up. Elizabethtown kept the pressure on and, after winning the second quarter by a 10-8 margin, took a 22-16 lead into halftime.
The Cougars opened the second half on a 5-0 spurt to open a 27-16 margin, but the Blue Devils finished the third quarter with a 10-4 run to pull within 31-26 going into the fourth frame.
Elizabethtown started the final quarter with a 6-3 spurt to take a 37-29 edge, and Clarkton answered with a 10-4 run to close the gap to 41-39 late in the game. Moments later, the Blue Devils used free throws to knot the game, then take their first lead of the contest at 44-43.
The Cougars had two more chances with the ball, but never got a shot off either time.
Jonathan Robinson led Clarkton with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Miquel Cooper had 15 points for Elizabethtown.
A low-scoring affair ensued to open the title tilt between the Lady Blue Devils of Clarkton School of Discovery and Lady Cougars of Elizabethtown Middle School. But a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Clarkton to end the first quarter gave the Lady Blue Devils an 8-3 edge going into the second stanza.
Clarkon went on a 5-2 spurt to open the second quarter in another low-scoring stanza before Elizabethtown tacked on a free throw late in the half to cut the deficit to 13-6.
A scoring explosion erupted in the third quarter, led by an 8-0 run by Elizabethtown to open the second half that gave the Lady Cougars a 14-13 edge. The two teams traded the lead back and forth before Clarkton finished the quarter with a 4-0 spurt to take a 21-18 lead into the fourth frame.
The two teams traded points through the early stages before the Lady Blue Devils went on a 5-0 run to take a 31-23 lead late. Elizabethtown rallied with a 3-0 spurt, but the comeback fell short.
Ashley hardin pulled down 17 rebounds for Clarkton, while Jayme Frady had eight steals. Erica McKoy led the Lady Blue Devils with 13 points.
Jatyre Moore-Peterson led both teams with 19 points for Elizabethtown.
