ELIZABETHTOWN — Along with playing a full schedule of high-school softball this spring, two East Bladen athletes are also honing their skills on the hardcourt.

Sophomores Lacey Suggs, a starting center fielder/pitcher for the Lady Eagles, and Abby Ward, the team’s starting shortstop — who recently finished a 30-game varsity basketball season after a deep run into the Class 2-A playoffs — are members of the AAU Garner Flames out of Wilmington.

According to East Bladen Athletics Director Patty Evers, the two are on the same team as players from Ashley, New Hanover and Hoggard. The team is being coached by Adrianne Gale of Ashley.

Evers said the AAU game is a good opportunity for both players.

“It is a fast-paced game that will give both of these players a great experience,” she said.

The spring season for the Garner Flames opened last weekend with three games. The team posted a 1-2 record, and both Suggs and Ward played in all three games.

According to Evers, Suggs scored 22 points in the winner, while Ward was credited with assists in all three games.

“They lost their first game by just one … 48-47,” Evers said.

The Garner Flames will play two or three weekend tournaments per month through early June.
