SOUTHPORT — West Bladen 2 got three RBI from Chandler Lennon and four Knights pitchers held off South Brunswick on Tuesday in the Dixie Pre-Majors opener for both teams.
Lennon’s two hits were the only safeties by the Knights, but West Bladen put several walks, errors, passed balls and sacrifices to fruitful use.
The Knights got on the board first when Joseph Miller worked a walk, swiped second base and came around to score on a passed ball in the second inning.
In the third, Ian Sykes nearly followed Miller’s recipe to score a run by walking and eventually coming home on a passed ball for a 2-0 West Bladen lead.
The Cougars scored a run to cut the deficit to 2-1, but West Bladen scored twice in the third when a pair of walks and errors brought home both runs for a 4-1 edge.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth frames, the Knights exploded for four runs in the sixth inning on the benefit of just one hit — but it was a big blow. Three walks loaded the bases ahead of Lennon, who blasted a three-run double and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Carson for an 8-1 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, the Cougars rallied for three runs to cut the margin to 8-4, but Lennon came on to put out the fire in relief on the mound.
West Bladen 2, now 1-0, will host East Bladen in a pair of five-inning games on Thursday.
