DUBLIN — The Vikings and Knights met in a clash of summer baseball league combatants on Tuesday, but it was Mother Nature who won out in the end.
In the Dixie Pre-Majors opener for both teams, West Bladen 1 and West Columbus competed to a 5-5 draw in the fourth inning when the game was called because of rain and lightning.
Trent West, the Knights’ starter on the hill, was touched up for three runs in the first frame by West Columbus, but the home team rallied quickly.
A pair of walks was followed by an RBI infield hit from Trevor Lesane. A fielder’s choice by Colby McLean drove home the second run for West Bladen and cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Vikings managed to plate two more runs and open a 5-2 edge, but West Bladen erupted for three runs in the bottom of of the third to knot the game. The Knights got an RBI single from Lesane and a two-run triple from McLean moments later.
Then the rain and lightning came, putting the contest into the books — at least temporarily — as a 5-5 tie. The game could be finished June 17 when West Bladen visits West Columbus or at another time decided by the coaches.
The Knights are scheduled for a pair of five-inning games at East Columbus on Thursday starting at 5 p.m.
