ELIZABETHTOWN — East Bladen got into the “W” column for the first time in the early soccer season with a 5-0 whitewashing of visiting West Columbus on Thursday.
The win moved the Eagles’ record to 1-1-3.
Scoring honors were spread around among five players for East Bladen as Alex Felder, Brooks McGill, Brandon Tatum, Jake Mazur and Tyler Polk all found the back of the West Columbus nets.
The Eagles opened a 2-0 advantage by halftime, then beat the Vikings’ defense for three more goals in the second half.
East Bladen is scheduled to host former Waccamaw Conference foe North Brunswick on Tuesday at 5 p.m., then travel to West Columbus on Thursday at 5 p.m.
— The Lady Eagles battled visiting Midway in the Four County Conference opener for both teams on Thursday, but couldn’t hold off the Lady Raiders and fell in three games by the scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-21.
East Bladen rolled to a 6-1 edge in the first game, but Midway answered with an 18-4 run that all but sealed the win.
In the second game, the Lady Eagles opened leads of 13-9, 18-11 and 22-19 — but the visitors managed a late 6-0 spurt to take the game.
In the third game, East Bladen moved out to leads of 4-0 and 9-3, but the lady Raiders bounced back with a 7-0 run and closed out the match with a 9-1 spurt.
Abby Norris recorded 16 kills and two blocks, while Lacey Suggs had 12 service points and four kills. Miller Heustess added 19 assists, as East Bladen fell to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
East Bladen will host Clinton on Tuesday and travel to Pender County on Thursday. Both are conference matches.
— In Dublin on Thursday, the Lady Knights opened the Four County Conference schedule by hosting Union, and scratching for a win in the first game 25-23, dropped the next three by the scores of 25-12, 25-22 and 25-19.
“The girls played hard,” said West Bladen coach Gaye Davis.
Morgan Sweeney led the Lady Knights with 12 kills. She also added six service points and three aces. Krisna Ransom contributed seven service winners with three aces, four kills and two blocks.
Laikyn Pait recorded four service winners, two of which were aces, while Lorna Smith had four kills. Kathryn Schultz had nine service points with an ace, a block and a kill.
West Bladen will host Wallace-Rose Hill on Tuesday in a conference match.
— West Bladen’s Lady Knights will be back in action Tuesday when they host Wallace-Rose Hill in a conference matchup, then travel to face Heidi Trask on Thursday.
— East Bladen’s Lady Eagles will get back on the court Tuesday when they host Clinton, then travel to Pender County on Thursday for conference matchups.
— The West Bladen Knights will play two non-conference matches on the road after the holiday when they travel to St. Pauls on Tuesday and Whiteville on Thursday.
