In Cerro Gordo on Tuesday, West Bladen No. 1 fell to West Columbus by an 11-1 verdict.
“We’re having trouble with numbers,” said coach Kim Cain. “We have some kids on vacation this week and another is playing travel ball, so it’s a real challenge keeping a team on the field.”
The Knights opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning when Trent West smacked an RBI double. But the Vikings answered with a pair of runs in the home half.
After a scoreless second and third innings, West Columbus broke the game wide open with seven runs in the fourth frame, then added two more in the fifth to seal the win.
“This isn’t about winning for us,” Cain said. “It’s about playing and getting better against good competition.”
West started on the hill for West Bladen and took the loss. Mason Hester hurled the fifth inning in relief.
