DUBLIN — The Knights’ No. 1 Dixie Youth Baseball Pre-Majors team dug itself an early hole with errors against its sister team on Monday and never recovered, dropping a 5-4 decision to West Bladen No. 2 in a game that was shortened by an inning because of rain.

The win improves the Knights’ No. 2 team to 2-3-1 and dropped West Bladen No. 1 to 4-3.

In the bottom of the first inning, a pair of errors and a single by Travis Bowen filled the bags for West Bladen No. 2, and Michael Pastore’s single brought home the first run. Another error sent tow more runs home and the early lead was 3-0.

In the bottom of the second, West Bladen No. 2 loaded the bags again with a walk and two errors before Trevor Lesane smacked a two-run double to extend the lead to 5-0.

“Errors really killed us,” said Kim Cain, coach of the Knights’ No. 1 team. “And then the rain kept us from completing the game.”

After a scoreless third inning, West Bladen No. 1 got on the board in the fourth frame when Liston Britt and John Waldrop each singled. A wild pitch pushed them up a base ahead of a fielder’s choice by Jeremy Hunt that scored Britt to cut the deficit to 5-1.

After goose eggs were put up in the fifth inning, West Bladen No. 1 mounted a rally in the sixth. A walk to Britt and double by Waldrop put two in scoring position — and each scored on wild pitches to pull the Knights’ No. squad to within 5-3. Walks to Mason Hester, Owen Peavey and Hunt filled the bags before Justin Ruffin was hit by a pitch to force home a run and get West Bladen No. 1 within one, but the rally ended there.

Mother Nature rained down before the seventh inning could be played.

— Tuesday’s game between West Bladen No. 1 and East Bladen in Dublin was cancelled when the Eagles couldn’t field a full team.

— In Tabor City on Tuesday, West Bladen No. 2 and South Columbus played to a 2-2 knot through three innings before the rains came and washed away the final four innings.

The game is not expected to be made up.

“If this weather keeps up, we may not be able to play much more this summer,” Cain said.

West Bladen No. 1 was scheduled to play a double-header on Thursday evening in Lake Waccamaw against East Columbus; West Bladen No. 2 was scheduled to host South Columbus in a double-header on Thursday.

West Bladen No. 1 will also be in action Saturday taking on Clinton in the first game of a scheduled double-header at 1 p.m.; West Bladen No. 2 will play Clinton in the second game on Saturday about 30 minutes after the end of the first game.
