ELIZABETHTOWN — The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office recently released its victim and arrest report for June 12 through June 19.

The report shows 48 victims of crime — including seven for physical and/or verbal assault, six for breaking and/or entering, and six for larceny.

There were also a total of 19 arrests during that time.

The following are the more interesting and/or important arrests:

— Reginald Antwan Richardson, 30, charged with assault on a female at 106 Courthouse Drive in Elizabethtown on June 12.

— Tracy Dean McDonald, 45, charged with felony extradition/fugitive from another state at 106 Courthouse Drive in Elizabethtown on June 12.

— Jackie Cheryl Melvin, 42, charged with communicating threats at 35 Pearline Road in Kelly on June 13.

— Anthony Duane Askins, 23, charged with assault on a female at 106 Courthouse Drive in Elizabethtown on June 14.

— Devin James Jacobs, 16, charged with assault inflicting serious injury at 3731 Natmore Road in Kelly on June 14.

— Amber Shara Cobbs, 22, charged with making harassing phone call at 5378 U.S. 701 North/N.C. 53 Hwy. East in Elizabethtown on June 15.

— Joshua Lewis Ward, 30, charged with felony breaking and/or entering at 102 Pine Acres Road in White oak on June 18.

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Elizabethtown-White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual awards banquet at Lu Mil Vineyard on Tuesday night, where Mac Campbell was presented with the Honorary Lifetime Chamber Member Award.

Also presented with awards were Giorgio’s Restaurant for Outstanding Small Business; Scott Walters for Outstanding Chamber Member Award; and David Clark with the Caring Person Award.

Campbell said he felt humbled when he learned he was to receive the award.

“My first reaction was that I think there are people more deserving than I am. I am flattered to be considered,” said Campbell.

Last year, Campbell presented the same award to former Elizabethtown Mayor Wallace Leinwand. Other past recipients include Roy Jessup, Hubert Kinlaw and Manly Clark Jr.

Campbell said he has tried to “instill a sense of duty as well as caring for your fellow man and your community” in his children and grandchildren through his own example of service to the community.

“The things I have done, I’ve sort of set the bar high for my family, for my sons and grandchildren,” said Campbell. “People sometimes think opportunity comes at the top. Opportunity comes at every level, every part of the chain is important.”

Campbell said that everything he is involved in is a team effort and involves more folks than just himself. He added that both he and his company, Campbell Oil, are involved in many activities and groups which help those in need in the county.

“We’ve been involved for a number of years at Lake Waccamaw Boys and Girls Home,” said Campbell.

He said that the Jaycee Cottage is one that he helps to sponsor at the home.

“I started an annual banquet in honor of my father at the Jaycee Cottage,” said Campbell. He said that he tries to raise money for the home through the Jaycee Cottage.

Another volunteer effort he is proud of, but is quick to point out there are others involved besides himself, is Bladen We Care.

“This coming year will be our 25th year,” said Campbell.

Bladen We Care has raised more than $1.5 million to help people in Bladen County with their health care matters.

He added Bladen We Care has assisted the Bladen Free Health Clinic and Habitat for Humanity to name two of the many groups who have been assisted.

Campbell said that he has had the honor of being able to assist in the endowment of a nursing scholarship for Bladen Community College.

“Currently we are working with BCC and UNC-Pembroke to establish an endowed scholarship at UNCP for Bladen residents who want to continue their education at UNCP,” said Campbell.

He added that he has always supported the Chamber of Commerce, its activities, and views it as an asset.

When asked what he wanted his legacy to be, he paused and said, “Hopefully, that I was a good person who helped people. I was willing to give my time to make the community better.”

He added that Dr. Howell Hyde served briefly as pastor at the church Campbell attends.

Campbell said, “Dr. Howell once said, ‘My life and the way I live it is my message’ — that pretty well sums it up … .”
