— September 24, 1984: McGirt Bridge, the bridge that spans the Cape Fear River (Hwy. 701), is demolished after 61 years of service. It was the first bridge to cross the river between Fayetteville to Wilmington. The demolition draws a crowd of 500 people. The new bridge will cost about $2.3 million.
— September 25, 1998: Pigs are escaping as a tractor-trailer is turned over on River Road near White Oak. The truck driver, of Clinton, entered a curve exceeding the speed limit. It doesn't appear as though anyone was hurt.

— September 24, 1953: The lights on an oil tanker went out after a driver from Lexington dimmed them on Hwy. 87 and caused $3,500 worth of damage. The driver ran off the road, killing one steer, one bull, three pigs and damaging the pasture fence of J.M. Moore of Council.
