TAR HEEL — A Fayetteville man died Wednesday afternoon in a fiery crash at the intersection of Purdie-Hall Road and N.C. 20.

According to Bladen County Coroner Hubbert Kinlaw, Christopher Lee Stevens, 35, of 975 Lisa Ave., was pronounced dead at the scene. Heather Nicole Taylor, Stevens’ girlfriend, and their 4-year-old child Micayla Stevens both were pulled from the car that was wedged beneath the trailer of an 18-wheeler. Taylor was treated and released, but the child remains in Cape Fear Regional Hospital.

Witnesses at the scene and Kinlaw said it appears as though Stevens ran the stop sign, went beneath the trailer and the vehicle was dragged down N.C. 20 a short distance.

Residents in the area of the crash and employees of Richard’s Garage aided in the removal of the woman and child before the car exploded into flames. The driver of the 18-wheeler suffered injuries to his right arm. He was not transported to the hospital.
